My brief Biographical data

My name is Dmitry Ghervas (Gervas). I was born on January 2, 1980 in Moldova. I am currently working as a gamedesigner.

I would like to briefly tell you about myself and my life.
In 1996 I finished the secondary school and entered the same year the Arts Institute of Moldova (which was later renamed  into the University of the Arts), in Kishinev city. In 2001 I graduated from the University of Arts of Moldova (now called the Academy of Fine Arts). I studied at the faculty “Theatrical Art” simultaneously on the specialty screenwriter (full-time) and variety show director (part-time; But then I studied theater directing and film directing, mostly individually).

After graduating the University of Arts I began working at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, where there are different scientific institutions. There was the Institute for the Study of the Arts, which later was merged with two other institutions, and established the Institute Cultural Heritage.
At the Institute of Arts Studies, I began working as a junior researcher in the department “Theatrical Arts”, I worked there from 2003 to 2006. In the newly-formed Institute for Cultural Heritage, I worked as a researcher, from 2006 until 2010, in the department of “Fine Arts” (Visual Arts). There, I mainly studied theater arts, drama and made research in these branches, wrote articles, made reports and presentations, and participated in scientific conferences.

My duties at the Academy of Sciences did not take much of my time, this allowed me to work simultaneously on a private television and radio. In 2007 I worked as a DJ at the radio station “Radio Media FM”. From 2007 to 2009 I worked on TV “Media TV Cimişlia”. The staff was very small, so I had to fulfill different duties. I worked as an audio and video editor, as a cameraman, TV host, and the operator of the ether. I filmed and mounted TV programs, made special effects and TV gingles, even learned how to work with 3D graphics and animation. For example my author`s TV program was “Game World” – a program dedicated to digital games (for PC & consoles). But I’m not worked it for a long time. Unfortunately it was so little paid that I even feel ashamed to think about such a low wage now.

At the same time I studied computer graphics, digital photomontage techniques and retouching.

In 2009 I resigned my post on TV, took a business patent and started my own photography business (I made photos and vignettes for kindergartens, schools, lyceums, and higher schools. But I worked alone, so it was extremely difficult. Two years later, I gave up this kind of activity. At this time I had a family, had a child and I started to look for high-paying job. At first, I did not have luck, but I was persistent.

After that I worked as animator 2D & 3D (basically 2D) in one animation studio (without ads), but because of financial problems, the studio was closed.
I also worked as a game designer in one game studio in Moldova. But recently, because of financial difficulties, the wage got very little and it is paid irregularly. In addition, from the very beginning I am limited in my actions, and I dream of personally participation in the process of creating games.
So I decided to create my own studio and to start making games that I am dreaming (about which I dream). I am going to implement many of my ideas for games. I believe in my forces and think that I will succeed. -)

I am the author of the scientific term interactivography. On October 16, 2013 I published scientific article where is formulated this term and is given an analysis of the phenomenon of electronic digital games (– details here: https://interactivography.wordpress.com/2013/10/16/manifest-interactivography-eng).

Hobbies:
I have always been fond of different kinds of arts and even branches of science. Since childhood, I read a lot of books on astronomy, physics.

Ever since elementary school, I liked painting. But I did not go to art school because I always loved being free in my actions, and I hated when someone restricted me in my work, and the School of Arts for children have always made children draw things that they do not like to. Though there they learn something and, yet limited in the freedom – for me it was unacceptable. Yet I realize very well that in order to be a painter one must go through  the school of Arts; it is necessary for gaining skills and knowledge. As for me I drew everything I wanted and I did not have the goal to become an artist. -))

In 1998 for the first time I bought a camera and I started taking pictures on film.  Since 2000 I have been doing artistic photography. Since 2009 I have been doing digital photography.

Also I have always had a dream to become a filmmaker, but this dream has not come true yet. But I believe that all is still ahead. When I was a first-year student, I seriously studied cinematography, directing, filming techniques of scenario planning. Some of this knowledge was with great success used by me while working on television.

In the game studio where I worked I had to write director scripts (cut directorial) for comics and one cartoon. But there my duties mainly comprise writing scripts for games and inventing new games with a variety of gameplay – it’s certainly very interesting and exciting, but still not that – there is no complete creative freedom.

And of course I am very much fond of GAMES. Yes, it is in capital letters – GAMES – for computers, home consoles, handheld consoles, phones and tablet PCs. Because, in comparison to other people, I think the game as a separate art form, along with cinema and theater, and maybe even something that is superior to them.

For the first time I got acquainted with games at school, when I saw a few of them on the primitive personal computers running on MS-DOS. The games were loaded from special diskettes. The games were simple, two-dimensional, but very colorful and exciting. Every game was like a separate world where one could be immersed in an unforgettable adventure. -)

But the kids at school go well rarely play on school computers. At lessons we mainly studied very boring things, and seldom were studied something interesting.

In 1998, on my very modest scholarship I was able to buy a gaming console NES (Famicom), which in the former Soviet Union, was sold under the brand name “Dandy.” It was then when I could get instant access to games. In 2002 I bought the console Sega Megadrive, and in 2003 – Sega Dreamcast, and at last started playing full three-dimensional games. It is on the Sega Dreamcast that I first became acquainted with the outstanding gaming masterpiece “Shenmue”, by the game designer Yu Suzuki. I would like him to know that I’m still waiting for the output of the third part of the game. ;)   And also I love very much his series of games “Virtua Fighters” and even “Virtua Racing” as well. (by the way, the last one has not come out in new versions, or am I mistaken?)

Well, now I am myself writing for games, invent new games and new types of gameplay and I hope to have my game studio, where I will be both as a screenwriter and as a director, and game designer, a modeler, a mapper, an animator, a video editor, a cameraman, and all I want.   -)
